New Superconcrete Guarantees Protection For Buildings Against Earthquakes And Seismic Waves

They guaranty protection against devastating seismic shocks of magnitude 9.0.

This new concrete is the savior material and it is known as the eco-friendly ductile cementitious composite (EDCC). The super concrete was precisely designed at the molecular level by the University of British Columbia. The properties of the material are steel-like and have the capacity to bare a lot of stress without damaging the wall. In fact, it bends the wall.

This simple, easy yet amazing material is just sprayed over the wall with the thickness of 10 millimeters. That’s it and the wall is protected from seismic shocks. This upgraded wall will bend at the high-stress level and prevents it from fracturing or breaking.

Quite promising results were found when the walls coated with EDCC were compared with non-coated walls. The shock-resisting capacity of EDCC was huge, it can combat Tohoku level earthquake. The material bends instead of fracturing or breaking when in a high level of stress.

Polymer-based fibers called fly ash and a few industrial supplements give sustainability and ductility to EDCC. According to Dr. Banthia, the supervisor of the research confirmed that it can also reduce the greenhouse gas emission when fly ash is replaced by almost 70% of the cement.

Availability And Uses

EDCC is commercially available in the markets of British Columbia, Canada. The use of EDCC will be initiated in the elementary school in Vancouver this fall. The use of EDCC in North India is also in the blueprint which is the most affected area for seismic activities.
