Old buildings, castles and monuments house their own world and history. You lose your senses to the beauty, the history and start imagining the lavish lifestyle of the people who dwelled here. Let's know more about it.
Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers, a 14th century masterpiece, stands in the town of Les Trois-Moutiers, in the middle of the woods in Poitou-Charentes region of France (about 200 miles southwest of Paris). It is said that this breathtaking, amazingly built castle caught fire in 1932 and had been abandoned since.
An Amazing History
Sources say that the construction of this fairytale like castle began early in the 13th century. The castle was owned by the very influential and illustrious royal family, the Bauçay family, lords of Loudun. The castle was originally known as Motte Bauçay (or Baussay). It is said that the castle was taken over by the English in the Middle Ages, making the castle a very well known place for high class gatherings and parties. The castle again faced turmoil during the French revolution as it was ransacked again.
A Past With Napoleon III
Motte Bauçay has its history with the great general Napoleon III too. It is said that in 1857 its ownership was passed to Baron Lejeune Edgar, a prominent Frenchman and the son of the famous general. The Bauçay family too had its links with the most celebrated royal families of that time.
The castle has been designed like the ones you see in fairytale movies. Delicate, strained glass windows, amazing stonework both indoors and outdoors and grand stairways, the ornately designed rooms and amazing and admirable elaborate archways, everything in the castle would force you to admire it. Every inch has been designed perfectly for the spectator to be left jaw dropped.
The abandoned castle is now hugged mosses and shrubs. You can see nature taking its hold over this amazing castle and is ruining its beauty. The castle has been a living proof to the royal gatherings and the lavish culture but now it lies abandoned. It is said that the fire in 1932 had ruined an entire library of rare books, tapestries, antique furniture and valuable paintings had all been lost. Now, that is actually a very big loss.
In 1981, a teacher named Marc Deyemer purchased Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers, with a hope to restore and repair the amazing piece of history. Despite the new ownership, vines and shrubs still continue to decay the castle. However, many other people have come forward to help restore the ruined castle. A non-profit organization has started a Facebook page to raise awareness and collect fund in order to restore the castle.
