Batteries can Be Part of the Fight Against Climate Change – If we do These Five Things
At a climate meeting, there was a discussion which says that battery driven car will help the environment. To keep the global warming below 1.5 degrees over 100 million electric vehicles should be in use by 2030. The market for batteries will be of $100 billion by 2025 and the use will increase in business and household. But factually batteries are equally harmful to human and environment. So to stop the hindrance of batteries one should cross following 5 barriers.
Carbon Footprint Reduction
Lithium-Ion battery used in electric cars will cover 90% of the market by 2025. It is equally true that carbon emission from these batteries is maximum starting from its extraction as raw material to its use and even recycling. There 3 major factors affecting:
It contributes to global warming as well as the energy used is more than combustion engine car.
If the battery is charged with coal power then it is very dirty in comparison with solar power.
Initially, the carbon footprint of electric vehicles is more but eventually, it matches with combustion engine since later on its clean.
Pollution Doesn’t Stop
Battery pollution is not limited to carbon emission only. Dust, fumes, and wastewater are produced in the Democratic Republic of the Congo due to cobalt mining. Water shortages and toxic spills of lithium are prominent in Latin America. Nickel mining pollutes river in Russia.
Reuse the Batteries
Batteries in electric cars are used for almost over 10 years after that it does not give required support to the car. Instead of throwing them away one can use those batteries in household, power plants and electrifying rural areas. This will increase battery life up to 20 years. Though reusing is costlier than virgin batteries.
To save the climate we will have to make the best of existing batteries. This will reduce toxic waste and pollution. A raw material is one third the price of recycling. But recycling is worth considering looking at the current scenario of the climate.
Other challenges are also faced by using batteries in electric cars like jeopardizing human rights and health due to the hazardous work environment. Focussing on one geographical area for raw material, which can also be important materials to be used elsewhere.
Global alliance, as well as private and public sectors worldwide, should come together and work on the battery production and use. Public awareness should be increased in this regards and take the step in saving the climate.
